We started Kankakee Valley in 2017 back when Tom was teaching 4th graders math. It was a low-income school and Mr. Tom saw the impacts of hunger first hand. After a talk with the principle in which he was informed “you can’t feed everyone” Mr. Tom took that as a challenge and became Farmer Tom, moving back to Indiana to transition his family farm to vegetable production..... We believe strongly in two tenants of food justice: transparency and access... Farmer Tom has a (probably too strong and definitely too loud) opinion that fresh, chemical-free food at farmers markets (including online ones like market wagon) shouldn't just be for rich people. A solid diet is the foundation upon which our lives are built: from schoolchildren to factory workers. We also believe it’s hard to be transparent about things you didn't grow: We grow the entirety of what we sell on Market Wagon: from sprout to harvest. We can tell you exactly which chemicals were applied (none! Not even organic ones) and we also love farm inspections and think they don’t happen often enough: if you come out to the farm in Walkerton we’ve got plenty to look at and even more work to volunteer for! .... Market Wagon does not have a mechanism for our pay-as-you-can model so unfortunately we have to pay static prices (plus and additional 30% to cover market wagon's share). Come see us at our farmers markets in Miller Beach on Sundays and LaPorte on Saturdays where we operate on a pay-as-you-can basis.
